Abstract
Malodor is general term used to explain any disagreeable odor in expired air the mouth is the main source of malodor production among of 80-90% of malodor patients.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of oral prophylaxis and professional toothpick method due to reducement of oral malodor. Eighteen patients has selected to above 2.2 ng/lOml of level of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC). The VSC of expired air were measured using portable gas chromatography and consulting self recognition(SR). And afterthat, the data was collected and analyzed.
The results were as follows ;
1. The SR of oral malodor reduced from 7.0 to 5.4(p < 0.05) after tongue cleaning and to 2.4 after professional toothpick method in test group, while from 5.5 to 3.8 and to 3.4 after oral prophylaxis in control group(p < 0.05).
2. The VSC level reduced from 15.4 ng/10ml to 15.0 ng/lOml after tongue cleaning and to 5.6 ng/lOml(p
< 0.05) after professional toothpick method in test group, while from 6.9 ng/lOml to 7.2 ng/lOml after
tongue cleaning and to 4.7 ng/10ml after oral prophylaxis in control group(p < 0.05).
3. The pocket depth reduced from 2.6 mm to 2.4 mm in test group and from 2.2 mm to 2.0 mm in control
group(p < 0.05).
4. The bleeding on probing reduced from 63% to 49% in test group and from 44% to 30% in control group(p < 0.05).
5. In perceptived painfulness during treatment time, the test group was 3.6 and the control group was 4.6(p > 0.05).
In conclusion, professional toothpick method was more efficient reducing oral malodor and gingival inflammation compared with oral prophylaxisis.
